The AEDSS Application Ontology: Enhanced Automatic Assessment of EDSS in Multiple Sclerosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) has been the most widely used measure of disability in multiple sclerosis clinical trials. Although EDSS has the advantage of familiarity with respect to recent proposals, yet is difficult to use consistently between evaluators. AEDSS (Automatic EDSS) is a computerized system designed to overcome this problem. It constrains the neurologist to follow precise reasoning steps enhancing EDSS reliability. In this paper we show how an accurate analysis of the neurological knowledge involved, and the development of an application ontology in the EDSS domain, can improve the performance of AEDSS. We present the details of the AEDSS application ontology and we highlight the enhancements to AEDSS due to this ontology. A validation experiment in four MS centers in italy showed that AEDSS improves EDSS reliability and in many cases is able to correct errors of neurologists. 1. Does Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy Help Multiple Sclerosis Patients? Report of a Pilot Study
Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with their potential to differentiate into mesodermal and non-mesodermal lineages have several immunomodulatory characteris-tics. These properties make them promising tools in cell and gene therapy. Objective: To evaluate the potential therapeutic applications of autologous MSC in improving clinical manifestations of MS patients. Methods: Ten patients w...

Background: The first purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of oral and laryngeal Diadochokinesis (DDK) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients in comparison with healthy people. The second goal was to determine if DDK rate has any relationship with the disease progression. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, two groups were enroll...
متن کاملRelation between EDSS and monosymptomatic or polysymptomatic onset in clinical manifestations of multiple sclerosis in Babol, northern Iran
Background: Polysymptomatic or monosymptomatic patients of multiple sclerosis (MS) at the onset of the disease may influence the natural course of the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic effect of the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) of patients with MS with polysymptomatic or monosymptomatic onset of the disease. Methods: From 2001 to 2011, 263 patients w...
متن کاملComparison of disability score estimation in multiple sclerosis patients with artificial neural network and decision tree models
Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the most debilitating disease among young adults. Understanding the disability score (Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS)) of these patients is helpful in choosing their treatment process. Calculating EDSS takes a lot of time for Neurologists, so having a way to estimate EDSS can be helpful. This study aimed to estimate the EDSS score of MS pati...

Ramadan fasting predispose multiple sclerosis (MS) patients to a great challenge. Clinicians should have practical knowledge about the effects of fasting on MS. A mini-symposium was held in 2013 to answer the common questions about fasting in MS patients. In current review we present a summary of the mentioned mini-symposium.Generally, fasting is possible for most stable MS patients. Thorough m...
